Things to Do When Preparing to Quit Smoking

Update:

Quitting smoking isn't like going to the store or taking a walk. It can be a complex process that you need to be prepared for, and the best way to do that is to learn everything you can about your addiction and what to expect as you go through the process of quitting.

First, make sure that you fully understand what causes your smoking addiction. The advent of nicotine replacement therapy and its ilk suggests that smoking can somehow be cured by some magic pill that you take, or stick on, or inhale. That's not the case. Smoking is, among other things, a collection of mental ties that link various events in your life to lighting a cigarette. More about this at the end of the article.

Second, ensure that you're aware of what the process of nicotine withdrawal entails. You're going to get irritable at times, you may feel slightly depressed, or you might feel anxiety. Make sure that people around you (parents, spouses, etc.) know what to expect, so it doesn't seem like you've lost your mind. The last thing you want is someone giving you a cigarette to "calm you down," as that would be rather counterproductive.

Third, come up with a quitting buddy. It sounds a bit lame at first, but it really does help. Find someone (a non-smoker or someone who has already quit) that you can call and talk to when you need to. It's important that they're a non-smoker, so they don't smoke around you when you're feeling cravings.
